Tunnel O’ Fun
My friend Jon and I humped it up here a few years back after seeing it as we came out from the Sheep valley. Looking east to Shunga-la-She’s north eastern ridge a hole appears with cobalt blue behind it, so we thought this would be a great place to view the prairies and Gibraltar.
Park at the end of the road at the end of the Sheep Valley road and hike or bike west a number of kilometers or anywhere that a river crossing would be the easiest which knowing this river is trying at the best of times.
Follow your nose and make you way up through trees, scrub, odd bit of scree until you pop outta the forest onto the main slopes leading up the north ridge. Follow this up on OK scree above a snout-plank like rock buttress on the east end and follow the ridge up until you see a tower of rock on the ridgeline. A larger tunnel best accessed from around the west side of this jutting tower is a nice place to relax and have lunch inside – the hole seen from the access road – and where you will get sweet views of the prairies or of Gibraltar Mountain in all its expansive glory.
However on the east side, low to the ground is the best: The Tunnel O’ Fun! A perfectly round, narrow tube that winds S-curve like for about 25m of crawling and pops out on the west side.
