The Kent Valley A.K.A. The Lost World
Eat your heart out Sir Conan Doyle this is Kananaskis version of the Lost World -hard to get into, hard to get out of and surely some creatures within you don’t want to meet! Let’s speculate that only a few desperate souls can lay claim to doing this secluded, hard hike in a back pocket of Kananaskis. Trails spiderweb out into all reaches of our “K” park with the exception of the Kent Valley-reserved for a most rugged undertaking indeed.
To get the true one way ticket feel to this adventure, take the scramble route up Mt.Lawson to its’ summit, opposite the Fortress Gas Station. From the top easily scree run down a widening cone into the large bowl like valley locked in by slightly high walls. From here it appears very casual of a way out to the Smith-Dorien south arm. But once you get into the thick of it not too far down you will realize it is more struggle, man-beating-nature kinda outing. Staying atop the Kent Ridge loses everything in this game of survival. It will feel like being trapped in a zoo as the only way out is south, into ever dense bush, rushing creek waters and hard navigation through the constriction vegetated walls as your last obstacle. Take it seriously, take a camera, only go once.
Oh, and bring bear spray. Expect a number of hours, a number of kilometers, upwards of ten on each front. Hiking up Kent Ridge does not count looking down onto this jungle, get into the thick of it!
