Mt.Kerkeslin, NW Face
FA -Chris Dunlope and Ed Laporte, circa 1979
This is a very fun spring objective that has virtually no info on line that we could find. Driving south from Jasper, it and Hardisty to the left command the valley with bright colored rock and the wonderful Horseshoe Lake nearby. The highway drives right under the route, the NW face making it real easy to scope with binoculars.
Basically climb snow slopes, we did it in April 1995, straight up the wide NW face to a final ledge beneath the wall. Belay in a couloir and climb a long rope length to a tiny belay on a ice ledge using rock gear.
The next pitch goes up the steep ice ramp. From here our party bailed in a bad snowstorm. Hope to summit this sometime onto summit and witness the massive glacier below. Descent the same way.
Kerkeslin has a huge glacier on the backside, a wonderful mountain viewed from Jasper especially when you live along the river!
I got an email from Ken Wallator informing me of the first ascent info as he had done it in 1986 with Rick Costea and Bjorn Erikson. It is a great route on a beautiful face, with a super close approach. Needs more traffic, go do it!
