extensive cleaning September 2006, G.Cornell
Racehorse Creek Campground is a good place to relax while bouldering in The Gap. It is $17/night as of 2013 and is only a five minute walk over to the questionable Racehorse boulders – or, free camp near Daisy Creek on either side of the road. In 2006 I noted it was $12 to camp per night, inflation! Rockymountain dot ca has good info for all that southern area for pay camping and is a well done site.
There is no need to drive from the campground! About 100m east of the campground is a open cutblock in the forest. Walk through it and the rock starts.
The rock is very crumbly in spots, needs cleaning to find further FA’s. Some very hard routes to unleash especially that overlappy white/black face higher up the slope. The boulders are very expansive with the east end more orange cobble crumbliness and spread out between boulders ending with a convave slab that has a reddy tinge to it with one known line – the center crack- which is no longer climbable as a huge tree fell onto it! You could avoid it though and try the center right side which has a runout little line sans rope. Whereas the west side has a very weird boulder slide simply because the slide is wide and heavy per tonnage but where in the hell did it exactly come from?! It’s a bit of a mystery since there is no rockface above it coulda tumbled from, just a calm, sparsely forested nice jumble of dark stone. Loads of exploring to do on either end of Racehorse. Send to Rockies Obscure any new info!
1)Dead Rock(VB) frontal reddy rock on edge of the cutblock – fine example of the more poor quality lines!
2)The Fort(VB) 3 rocks make a cave-use corner/topjug to ascend. Harder without using the top to start.
3)Project: up the left edge of a horizontal crack on white rock. You will find much moss to the left.
4)Project: a dual crack roof. If you duck under pine limbs you’ll find other bald overhangs to tackle.
5)Project: ascend the right arete of this steep face, attempted but needs extra cleaning, bring-a-brush.
6)Bobby Peru(V3) back of #5 is a cave.Stand off some crimpers and haul up short face with no feet.Fun.
7)Brave Fox(V0) walk out into the woods-SS left, commit off bonging flake, traverse right on crack.Fear.
8)Cutter(VB) right-facing corner even kids will laugh! 9)Haunted Rock(VB) rock in woods-SS west face.
10)Mountain Flower(V0) behind a tree, traverse crusty dark slab from right to 2-finger pocket and go up.
11)Turtle Keeper(V0) reddy cobbled face; from right, move to black hole, left up depression. Cute fun.
12)Project: two cracks that will make good problems when cleaned and solved. Steep V? faces nearby.
13)Lightning McQueen(V0) jam hand crack, go right, up wall.Walk into trees. Climb the 25m red slab center- unclimbable since a tree fell onto it, but center right of slab is interesting.
